The Chattanooga Police Department is inviting the public to its annual National Night Out kickoff event. This free community gathering will take place on Tuesday, October 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Silverdale Baptist Church, located at 7236 Bonny Oaks Drive.

The event aims to build stronger community-police relationships and promote neighborhood safety.

National Night Out is a nationwide campaign that brings together law enforcement and neighbors under positive circumstances. Attendees will have the chance to meet local officers, see police vehicles and equipment up close, and enjoy an evening of community fun.

This year marks the 42nd annual National Night Out, a tradition that began in 1984. The campaign was founded by Matt Peskin, who was the executive director of the National Association of Town Watch. It started simply, with residents turning on their porch lights and gathering in front of their homes to show neighborhood solidarity. The first event involved 2.5 million people in 400 communities across 23 states.

Since then, National Night Out has evolved into a celebration featuring block parties, festivals, and community gatherings that highlight safety demonstrations and local emergency services.

It remains a key event for fostering a sense of community and enhancing the partnership between residents and law enforcement.  For more information, please contact the Chattanooga Police Department at 423-643-5000.
