Last Thursday John L. Edwards, lll, publisher of Chattanooga’s longest operating African American Newspaper, the Chattanooga News Chronicle (37 years) had an unexpected visit with former University of Tennessee head football coach and Athletic Director, Phil Fulmer. Coach Fulmer was in Chattanooga on business and the two ran into each other at a local restaurant. Edward’s newspaper was one of only two black-owned newspapers covering Tennessee football in the press box and on the field during Fulmer’s tenure. Of course, the conversation included the late Reggie White who played at Howard High School and was one of the Volunteers most famous football players. Fulmer also mentioned up and coming player from Chattanooga Brainerd High School, Bo Carter who UT is expecting great things from. Coach Fulmer presently serves as advisor to UT president for community, athletics, and university relations.
