The path to a fulfilling career often winds through years of uncertainty and false starts. But for Chattanooga Fire Department Lieutenant Jordan Middlebrooks, the direction was never in doubt. Inspired by his father, CFD Battalion Chief Nathaniel “Nate” Middlebrooks, Jordan knew from childhood where he belonged. Now, this father-son duo has transformed their shared calling into a family legacy, working together to safeguard the community that raised them both.
That early inspiration not only guided Jordan Middlebrooks toward a career in firefighting–it also ignited a drive for excellence that has defined his journey.
Last month, his dedication was honored with a promotion to Lieutenant on Squad 1, Blue Shift. Based out of Chattanooga Fire Station 1–located at 218 E. Main Street–Squad 1 serves the heart of the downtown area. This milestone marks another highlight in an already distinguished career. In 2018, Middlebrooks was named Rookie of the Year by Fire Chief Phil Hyman at the department’s annual awards ceremony.
His valor shone again in May 2019, when he received a Life-Saving Medal for his actions during a residential fire. On May 25, 2019, Middlebrooks and his team responded to a blaze with a reported entrapment. Their swift and skillful primary search resulted in the successful rescue of a victim who ultimately survived–demonstrating remarkable courage and professionalism under pressure.
But his leadership extends beyond emergency response. During the recruitment period for the 2024 Chattanooga Fire Academy, then-Senior Firefighter Middlebrooks led innovative efforts to support firefighter candidates. His initiatives helped applicants prepare for both the physical and written entrance exams, streamlining the department’s hiring process and setting a higher standard for future recruitment.
When asked about his greatest inspiration, Middlebrooks points without hesitation to his father.
“My dad, Nathaniel Middlebrooks, is a Battalion Chief in the Chattanooga Fire Department,” he said in a published interview. “I was drawn to the atmosphere at a very young age while visiting my father at the fire hall. I witnessed lessons taught, lessons learned, positive connections, and the camaraderie and service to the community for many years. His footprints are large, and his strides are even larger.”
For Jordan, the fire hall was more than a workplace–it was a classroom where he absorbed his father’s values of service and teamwork. Battalion Chief Nate Middlebrooks oversees fire halls in District 2 on Blue Shift, working alongside his son as they continue a shared heritage. Their story is one of family, duty and community, proving that for the Middlebrooks, firefighting is more than a job–it’s a calling.
