AMVETS Post 36 has been a staple in the East Chattanooga community for approximately twenty years. The post was founded by Jesse Curtis, a local middle school principal in the 1980s and a veteran of the Armed Services. The post has been through a lot of changes in the past two decades but has remained a strong resource for veterans in the area. Last Fall, the veterans of Post 36 held a Trunk or Treat for the second year in a row where they gave away candy and free hot dogs to the community. The organization also held their first Veteran Food Drive last month where they were able to feed 15 veterans in the community.

The organization issues JROTC awards to all the local high schools each year and has made presentations at Hixson High School in the past.  In 2026, we intend to include Red Bank HS and East Ridge HS for presentations.

The AMVETS participated in the Armed Forces Day Parade and Luncheon each year as well as the Veterans Day parade in the Fall. And we currently have plans to give away free hot dogs during Hamilton County’s Spring Break in March 2026.

The AMVETS hold meetings at the Veterans Club at 2114 Wilder Street and will post the date of the free hot dogs on their door soon.

Please come out and support the efforts of AMVETS Post 36!  And, if you are a veteran in need of camaraderie, or would like to volunteer to help other veterans, please come out and meet the vets of American Veterans Post 36.
