The Chattanooga Fire Department has announced the promotion of longtime firefighter William Jackson to Deputy Fire Marshal, filling the leadership role left vacant by the recent retirement of Deputy Fire Marshal Michael Wright. Wright served the department and City of Chattanooga with distinction for 27 years.

Jackson brings 24 years of service to his new position, including 10 years of specialized work within the Fire Marshal’s Office. His extensive knowledge of fire prevention, inspections, and code enforcement, combined with his reputation for professionalism, made him a standout candidate for the role.

Fire Chief Terry Knowles praised Jackson’s record and readiness for leadership.

“There is truly no one better suited to lead this division and take on such an important responsibility,” Knowles said. “As he steps into this critical position, I am confident that he will continue to excel and guide the division forward.”

Colleagues describe Jackson as a leader marked by integrity, humility, and strong institutional knowledge–qualities that have earned him broad respect throughout the department.

The Deputy Fire Marshal is one of the most important positions within the Fire Prevention Bureau, responsible for ensuring that buildings across Chattanooga meet fire and life safety standards.

In this capacity, Jackson will oversee inspections of commercial, industrial and public structures; review fire suppression and alarm plans for new construction; investigate the cause and origin of fires; assist with public fire safety education; supervise bureau staff; and provide technical guidance to architects, engineers and contractors on fire safety requirements.

Wright, in his nearly three decades of service, played a significant role in Chattanooga’s development by overseeing and approving life safety measures for all new construction projects citywide. Jackson will now continue that legacy of safety and compliance.
