Often, a guidance counselor answers only students’ questions. If you don’t know to ask and are not aware, be informed that inquiring about starting salary and benefits are great. Understanding the long-term opportunities for advancement and growth in earnings are wise questions!
If, however, you’re looking for an immediate boost of pay, consider expanding your skill through continuing education, an internship, or a program based on skills based learning on the job.
About 84% of the 2,200 hiring managers who were surveyed by The 2026 Salary Guide From Robert Half revealed that they plan to offer higher salaries to candidates with specialized skills.
What are those skills, and what’s the boost in starting pay?
1. Artificial intelligence and machine learning: 4.1%
2. Public accounting, tax, audit and assurance: 3.7%
3. Content strategy, digital project management and marketing analytics: 3.3%
4. Customer support and healthcare administration: 3.0%
5. Legal contract management: 2.7%
6. Compensation and benefits: 2.4%
While the money may not be the ultimate goal, having the advantage of skills and experience in these areas put your resume up top if all other factors are equal.
Check into online opportunities for certificate and skills programs if time is a critical factor or limitation.
Keep learning and don’t grow stale in a workforce that’s ever-changing!
