The Hunter Museum of American Art is offering free admission to active-duty military personnel and their families from May 17 to Sept. 1 as part of the Blue Star Museums program. This national initiative, a collaboration with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and the Department of Defense, provides military families with complimentary access to over 2,000 museums across the country this summer.

The Hunter Museum of American Art is honoring the service and sacrifice of the nation’s military families by offering free admission this summer through the Blue Star Museums program.

Located at 10 Bluff View, overlooking the scenic Tennessee River, the Hunter Museum joins more than 2,000 museums across the country in the annual initiative, which offers free entry to active-duty U.S. military personnel and their families from Armed Forces Day through Labor Day. This year’s program began Sat., May 17, and will continue through Mon., Sept. 1.

Blue Star Museums is a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Blue Star Families, the U.S. Department of Defense, and participating museums nationwide. It includes not only art museums like the Hunter but also science centers, children’s museums, zoos, and nature centers.

Eligible participants include those currently serving in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, Coast Guard, and members of the National Guard and Reserve, as well as the U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Commissioned Officer Corps. Military ID holders may bring up to five family members per visit. A military ID, such as a CAC card or DD Form 1173, is required for admission.

Founded in 1952 and situated in the historic Bluff View Art District, the Hunter Museum showcases one of the most comprehensive collections of American art in the Southeast. Its three-part building–featuring classical revival, brutalist, and contemporary architectural elements–reflects the evolution of both American art and design.

Admission through Blue Star Museums covers general entry to the Hunter’s permanent collection and select exhibits. Special exhibitions or ticketed events may require an additional fee. Families of deployed service members are also eligible, even if the active-duty member is not present.

The Blue Star Museums initiative began in 2010 to enhance the quality of life for military families–especially those with young children–and to offer an affordable and enriching experience during summer break. To date, millions have participated.
